The Week in Reggae: Shabba Ranks X The Fader, Natalie Storm X The Heatwave & Gentleman X #1

Here’s a quick rundown of what struck me in the world of Jamaican popular culture in the last couple of days:

Shabba Ranks makes cover of The Fader’s Icon Issue 67

Around the same time in the early ’90s, MTV’s 120 Minutes replayed the macabre clip for Siouxsie & the Banshees’ “Cities in Dust” while Shabba Ranks’ “Mr. Loverman” entered heavy rotation. The latter featured Ranks riding king-like on a raft across a Jamaican waterway among a gaggle of girls. In an era when MTV had musical impact, these two ruled the airwaves as unlikely royalty: Siouxsie Sioux the smoldering goddess of the underworld, Shabba cutting a stoic figure across maniacal crossover dancehall.

The Heatwave unleashes a refix of Natalie Storm UK funky monster

Here’s a big new tune that’s been causing a madness in Heatwave sets for months and is now getting played by the likes of Toddla T, Sinden and Bok Bok… Natalie Storm from Jamaica hooks up with UK funky producer Footsteps for a massive funky bashment refix by The Heatwave.

Gentleman’s new album hits #01 in German charts in the first week after its release
