We just learned that yesterday, Peter-Paul Zahl died from cancer in Port Antonio, Jamaica.
Zahl was a German anarchist who turned author while spending ten years in prison in the 70s after shooting at a police during a manhunt for terrorists. In 1985, he emigrated to Jamaica where he was granted Jamaican citizenship and worked as a stage director and writer.
GABE and I got the chance to get to know Zahl during our stay in Jamaica in 2006/2007 when we spent some off-days at his Rose Hill Cottage – a nice little guest house right at Long Bay beach. While »Pepe« wasn’t an easy character, he was definitely a very interesting intelligent person who was kind enough to take some time and read his latest stories to us just before we had to return to Germany (see picture above).
May he rest in peace.

I spent time (one year) with Peter in Ossendorf in 1973 . nice person ,very intelligent . He told me what was going on in politics also suggested books to read . Not all of them on politics and he taught me to play skat . I thought of him a lot over the years as he influenced the way I view things . I am saddened by his passing R.I.P. Peter Paul Zahl .
I am seeing for the first time that PP Zahl has died. I wanted to tell him some interesting news, and was searching for a way to contact him and instead I find this. I am so sad. What I wanted to tell him was that I recently moved from the USA to Germany. In the process, I packed and unpacked the thousands of papers I had crammed in every nook and cranny. And I found the correspondence between Rudi Dutschke and Peter Paul Zahl which I had searched for everywhere in 2001 and could not find. PP Zahl had a copy of the correspondence which was incomplete. What I have is complete and the missing pages are here. What can I do? If there is going to be any kind of Gesamtwerke or whatever, I HAVE THE MISSING PAGES.
Gretchen Dutschke
During the 1970s I corresponded with him while he was in prison in Berlin, I think. I was in exile from South Africa at the time, living in Amsterdam. I’m certainly not hear of his death. Anthony Akerman.
Knew him in Bluefields in Nicaragua during the war against the Contra. A wonderful man. A tireless critic of easy cruelty. I am sure he will be much missed. Deepest sympathy.
