SEEN around the world.

These days, mad many pictures of people from all around the world representing our stuff pop up on the web. Luckily, our man Tim Turbo spots all of them.

For today, we picked out shots of friends and fans wearing the »Venom« a.k.a. »Mad Cobra« T-shirt and the »Everybody is a Star« tee. From picture one top left to picture two bottom right we are happy to present:

DJ Beware (Vienna, Austria) looking nice in seen. hanging out at the International Radio Festival in Zurich, Switzerland, with his FM4 colleague Matthias »Functionist« Schoenauer.

Gnucci Banana (Johannesburg, South Africa & Malmoe, Sweden) looking nice in seen. hailing on Twitter with another great review of her husband Spoek’s debut album in her hands.

Ward 21 (Kingston, Jamaica) looking nice in seen. doing an interview for Sverige Radio during their recent »Shake Up Ya« tour.

Estelle (Paris, France) looking nice in seen. on Robin P’s blog.

One half of Schlachthofbronx, Jakob (Munich, Germany), looking nice in seen. at a photoshoot with his colleague Bene.

Nico (Hamburg, Germany) looking nice in seen. at the Major Lazer X Red Bull Music Academy party in London.

Thanks, all of you, for taking the niceness to the world. One!

Happy 5th Birthday, Man Recordings!

seen. on Douster

While we took it easy on the blog side of things in the past couple of days, our friend Daniel Haaksman celebrated the 5th birthday of his label Man Recordings.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for putting not only his heart but hard hard work into the project to help pushing Baile Funk as well as all kinds of other forms of »Ghetto Bass« music in Europe and the world onto another level.

Even though Man Recordings has not been putting out many tunes that fit into the musical genres we mainly refer to – dub, reggae, and dancehall – I have always looked at Daniel as a soulmate. He also chose to go to the epicentre of the music that inspired him most at a certain point of time and found a way to express his love to the music with his 50 (!) record releases and the graphics that come with them.

To learn more about Daniel and Man Recordings – definitely check out the interviews that Tropical Bass and Style Mag (including a picture of Schlachtofbronx’ Jakob representing in seen.) did with him, as well as the 5th anniversary video he put together which features label friends and fans such as

Crookers, Diplo, Switch, Jesse Rose, Count+Sinden, Feadz, Schlachthofbronx and many others.

Thanks, Daniel – on to the next 5!

Good Times! Notting Hill Carnival 2010

posted on September 6th, 2010 by in Event, Photography, SEEN

Sorry, mates, I have been a little lazy updating this blog in the last couple of weeks.

The reason for this is mainly our little excursion to Notting Hill Carnival on the last weekend of August. The days defore going, I could not really think of anything but the Carnival, and after returning, I got sick because of four joyful days with many ours of raving, drinking, and skanking out to great music, and very very little sleep.

But I am back on track and first of all I would like to share some impressions from the Carnival weekend.

For the seen. crew, it all started off Saturday night, when we went straight to the Urban Nerds X Bigger Than Berry Carnival session in Shoreditch after moving into a shitty eight-bed doghouse near Bayswater station. The warehouse was already ram when we arrived after quite a bit of tipsy strawling around following the sirene-ish voice of Katy B performing live. On the bashment floor, The Heatwave was doing it right. Then, Toddla T took over alongside Lady Chann for a while before Gabriel Heatwave stepped back in to please the massive.

Sunday then was straight soundsystem joy for us. Those who know us know that we are a bunch of ignorant fucks when it comes to Soca – that is why the only time we saw the parade was whenever we had to cross it in order to move or out the Carnival area. Anyway. Sunday lived up to its name and we spent the whole day emptying cans of Red Stripe and eating Jerk Chicken in front of the speakers of Jah Observer, Channel One, and Nasty Love. Unfortunately, we did not make it to The Deadly Rhythm party at Brixton at night – but it turned out that taking it a little easy the day before Monday was a good decision.

When we got to the Red Bull Music Academy place under the Westway on Monday at around 11am, people already started to line-up like crazy. Those who attented the party last year know why: Red Bull not only books a set of great DJs and artists for Carnival Monday (this year, Douster, Poirier, Joker, Rodigan, Major Lazer and Lee Perry were on the bill), they also hand out drinks and food for free for the whole damn day. Doors opened at 12 and what I especially enjoyed in the seven hours to follow was the fact that this year the original dancehall flavour ruled over electro stompers despite the rather hipster-esque setup. Especially Poirier Sound and Rodigan treated the crowd wicked with excellent selections.

Check a bunch of photos from Notting Hill Carnival weekend I uploaded to the seen. flickr account and make sure to listen back to the sets from the Red Bull party over at the Music Academy page.

PS: Also check a video of Rodigan mashing the place up from minute one, Gabriel Heatwave’s Carnival rundown on Eddie Stats’ Large-up blog, and a nice selection of NHC 2010 photos over at Hey Rudie.

Yes, it is that time of the year again!

The seen. crew leaves for London town tomorrow to enjoy three days and nights of Notting Hill Carnival madness.

Listen the latest Guardian Music Weekly podcast below in case you want to warm-up yourself or to check what you miss in case you can not make it to NHC:

This week, the podcast team have slapped on their baseball caps, William Hague style, and are sipping from a coconut in preparation for this weekend’s Notting Hill carnival.

We meet DJ Norman Jay who tells us about his favourite carnival memories and how his life changed after the riots in 1976. Then we take a trip down to Carnival Village to see how preparations are going. And we’ve got an exclusive track from the Jamaican band The Jolly Boys.

PS: Good news for all the ladies: before we leave to LDN, we will drop the ladies shirts you ordered at the post office, so you should hold them in your hands fairly soon.
