Saxon Sound in the Boiler Room

Via DJ Shirkhan I just learned that the good people from Saxon Sound International including Tippa Irie on the mic played in the Boiler Room. Click on the image above to watch their set.

PS: Also make sure to check out Saxon’s collection of retro flyers on their website.

Top 10 Jamaica-related Youtube videos of 2011.

posted on December 30th, 2011 by in Video

Following last year’s list of our top 10 Youtube videos of 2010, for 2011, too, we put together a playlist of our favourite Jamaica-related clips.

On top of the list for ’11 is, of course, the man called Cliff-Twang Brown and the bus which can’t swim, followed closely by Richard Atkison’s Vybz Kartel piano medley and some white kids talking about Sizzla Kalonji in a BBC documentary. We also liked some 1996 VHS Kingston-footage re-animated by The Afflicted Yard, our friend Rachel Jones looking good getting wasted in an un-official Weeknd video, Nas and Junior Gong visiting Jamaica and talking about their Distant Relatives project, Gyptian performing a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR, Papa Jaro cutting a dubplate at the Jaro headquarters, a Jamaican lady freaking out in a US supermarket and an interview with Mr. Breast Milk of Breast Milk Auto Repair.

Put your personal favourites in the comment section, please.

Red Bull Music Academy: Clive Chin (2003).

posted on December 29th, 2011 by in Article, Video

The Red Bull Music Academy has seen quite a few lectures with legendary Jamaicans – like e.g. Sly & Robbie, Steely & Clevie or Jeremy Harding – and I think we have posted all of them.

There is also a »Come in my kitchen« episode with Clive Chin from 2003 which we haven’t shared the video recordings of yet but it’s definitely worth being shared.

Watch Chin talk about the role of his family for Jamaican music, his time at Randy’s, his restaurant venture in Queens, and his return to the Reggae business above.

Rahzel, The Roots and Shaggy inna Dancehall style.

posted on December 27th, 2011 by in Video of the Week

Our friend’s over at Large Up just published the first out of three videos from this year’s Okayplayer Holiday Jam at Brooklyn Bowl, New York:

Rahzel sets things up with a beatbox version of the Bam Bam riddim, leading the audience in a singalong of »Murder She Wrote,« before bringing a dapper, cocktail-toting Shaggy out for a siiickkk combination on the Stalag riddim.

Eventually the Roots, starting with Questlove on drums, join in as the Godfather of Noyze and Mr. Lover Lover lead a chant-a-long, mixing vibes from »Buddy Bye« and »Dust Out a Sound Bwoy«.

Nuff said. Looks like a legendary night indeed – large up DJ Gravy and crew! Cyan wait to see the other two recordings.
